Caring Too Much Can Cost You Your Mind

The stresses and strains of caring for someone for 50 or more hours a week leads to accelerated cognitive decline in middle-aged and older people, a new UCL study has found. But the picture is more nuanced than it first appears. Providing a few hours of support outside the household may actually help caregivers maintain their cognitive health as they age. Researchers are now calling on governments to give intensive carers better access to funded relief and replacement care before the toll becomes irreversible. By 2040, around 20 percent of adults in England will be living with major illnesses, making this finding more urgent than ever.
